What is betrayal trauma ?

Betrayal trauma is the distress and pain that is caused by a rupture of trust by a person or institution we are deeply attached to and/or rely on for safety.

Examples of betrayal trauma could be:

  • Physical or emotional infidelity

  • Physical, emotional or sexual abuse

  • A partner’s sex/pornography addiction

  • Emotional withdrawal/detachment from the relationship

  • Financial manipulation/deceitfulness (secret accounts, debt or a gambling problem)

  • The failing of an institution (healthcare, police force, workplaces, schools) to protect or respond in a supportive and appropriate manner to wrongdoings

Symptoms of betrayal trauma

  • hyper-vigilance/looking for signs of danger

  • nightmares/flashbacks/intrusive thoughts

  • memory loss/difficulty concentrating

  • fatigue/lethargy

  • body pain/headaches

  • digestive issues

  • agitation/irritability/hostility

  • numbness/loss of interest in hobbies
